The Israel Lobby

A bit dated, but nevertheless very informative. Enjoy: (Update: Caution, extremely long!)

The Israel Lobby

John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt

For the past several decades, and especially since the Six-Day War in 1967, the centrepiece of US Middle Eastern policy has been its relationship with Israel. The combination of unwavering support for Israel and the related effort to spread ‘democracy’ throughout the region has inflamed Arab and Islamic opinion and jeopardised not only US security but that of much of the rest of the world. This situation has no equal in American political history. Why has the US been willing to set aside its own security and that of many of its allies in order to advance the interests of another state? One might assume that the bond between the two countries was based on shared strategic interests or compelling moral imperatives, but neither explanation can account for the remarkable level of material and diplomatic support that the US provides.

It would seem to me that someone stuck in Germany would have something better to do than to entertain conspiracy theories.

In normal countries, all have the right to organize politically. If Israel has friends, so what? The hidden argument is that Jews should be barred from any political activity.

The idea that Israel controls America, that she controls American Presidents is so absurd that only an Arab can accept it. That’s why the Moslem world, including Egypt, is so backward.

You’re entitled to criticize this article as much as you like, but you didn’t even attempt to disprove anything that’s written in there. Written it off as conspiracy theories is almost too easy.

There’s a very clear line between having friends (something desirable, and a right of every country), and this type of unpragmatic and corrupt behaviour that comes at the cost of another group of people. It’s evident that the lobby is not only fighting for Israel’s rights, but for Israel’s unlimited rights, and for the prevention of Palestinian rights.

    Lies.

Alan Dershowitz already has handily debunked Walt and Mersheimer’s book of lies.

‘Palestinian’ ‘rights’ are not being ‘prevented’ by the ‘Israel lobby’ or nasty JOOZ. Rather, it is people like you who make excuses for the ‘Palestinian’ oppressors, namely, their hate-based leadership as well as the Arab League. This is what keeps the ‘Palestinian’ people in refugee camps, rather than re-patriated. Why re-patriate ‘Palestinians’ when you can instead use them as a tool to protect self-criticism?

You and others like you are the worst enemies the ‘Palestinian’ people ever had.

Hah. Funny you should say Alan Dershowitz debunking a “book of lies”, when the same person has proven to be a liar himself.

Remarkable how you fly straight into a brick wall with your reasoning. It’s ISRAEL that refuses the Palestinian refugees the right to return.
And why should the people be repatriated, when THEY want to return to the place they were expelled from? This would ultimately mean that Zionism has achieved its goal of ethnic cleansing, and that the Palestinian refugees have been robbed of their rightful self-determination. The Governments of the neighbouring Arab countries should be ashamed for not giving them semi-dignified conditions to live under, and the Israeli government should be ashamed for its outright hypocrisy in taking away the Palestinians’ right to return, while having demanded the right to return for itself.
Filthy double standards that don’t seem to bug you.

“You and others like you are the worst enemies the ‘Palestinian’ people ever had.”

If it were up to me, these people would be back in their homes where they belong now, without any delay. Furthermore, YOU were the one who said Palestinians had no right to return to their homeland. YOU were the one who said Israel would be stupid if it gave back an inch of land it had stolen. YOU are the one putting the word Palestinian in quotation marks, as if they have no right to call themselves that, and it was YOU who has applauded war crimes on the population of Gaza, claiming that they all deserve it. Ooh, but I’m the antisemite, riiight, because you say so.

I’m not taking this nonsensical torrent of inane accusations that you’ve pulled out from God-knows-where. Once again, I declare you persona-non-grata on this blog.

You need to post a warning about the length of that article WOW !. I hope to return but wanted to throw a comment in. I think the Lobby conspiracy is a bit out there.I find a couple of the time line items skewed and questionable otherwise that aspect of it is pretty good. The complexity of the issue outside of pure human terms is astounding and incalculable when you add the humanity.Anyway good luck on some feedback,be interested in seeing a personal view from you, hope to return Take Care Sphinx-Guten Tag

You’re right Fray, I should’ve said that it’s really long. Updated now, thanks :)

The support of the US for Israel is rather unique, when you think about how American tax dollars are being spent extremely (almost too) generously on the welfare of a nation that’s already very well off already.
When you put the situation in Gaza into the whole story, it takes up new dimensions in complexity, because as far as I know, it is widely unreported in the American media. Not that I’m blaming you for not seeing anything, but it takes a well organized propaganda machine to prevent images like this (Video) from reaching the American public. It’s remarkable what difference there was between the wide coverage on the tragic shooting at the school in Jerusalem, and the almost non-existent reporting about the incursion on Gaza which left more than 10 times as much Palestinians dead (many of them children as well) just a couple of weeks before.
Inducing ignorance about the situation is the only way to stop American citizens from (IMHO rightfully) saying: “Wait a second, I don’t want my tax dollars spent on that“. I believe this is barely possible without an extremely well-organized influence that keeps the support alive, coming from people who try and find justification in about anything Israel does or not (and if you scroll upwards in this comment section you’ll see what I mean). Otherwise it’s hard to imagine how incidents like the USS Liberty and Israeli spying on America can just go by ‘unnoticed’ with next to no impact on the mutual relation between the US and Israel.
This can’t go on well forever, because in the case that Israel brings upon a real catastrophe to America at some point, it might already be too late to rethink the unconditional support.

Sorry if this has been a bit messy, it’s 4:30 AM around here, so that was my honest written-while-half-asleep feedback on the issue. Thanks for passing by though :) Take care!
